6 Tips to Keep Your Hands Soft During Winter

How to Prevent Dry Hands and Keep Your Skin Moisturized

Winter is beautiful with its chilly weather, snowflakes, and hot cocoa. However, as the temperature drops, the air and our skin become drier. Dry skin is a common problem during winter, especially on our hands. The cold air, indoor heating, and frequent hand washing can all contribute to dry, cracked, and painful hands. In this blog post, we will discuss the causes of dry hands during winter and some practical tips to keep your skin soft and healthy.

Causes of Dry Hands During Winter

  1. Low humidity levels: During winter, the humidity level drops, and the air becomes drier. This dry air can steal moisture from our skin and leave it dry and itchy.
  2. Frequent hand washing: We tend to wash our hands more often during winter to avoid colds and flu. However, frequent hand washing can strip our skin of its natural oils and cause dryness and irritation.
  3. Indoor heating: We spend more time indoors during winter, and we rely on heating systems to keep our homes warm. However, indoor heating can reduce the moisture in the air, leading to dry skin.
  4. Hot showers: After a cold day outside, a hot shower can feel heavenly. However, hot water can strip our skin of its natural oils and cause dryness and irritation.

Tips to Prevent Dry Hands During Winter

Moisturize your hands regularly:

The best way to prevent dry hands during winter is to moisturize them regularly. Use a moisturizing cream or lotion that contains humectants such as glycerin, urea, or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients attract moisture to the skin and prevent dryness. Apply the moisturizer after washing your hands and before going to bed.

Use lukewarm water:

Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause dryness. Use lukewarm water instead of hot water when washing your hands or taking a shower. Lukewarm water is less harsh on your skin and helps to retain its natural oils.

Protect your hands:

Wear gloves when you are outside, especially when it is cold and windy. Gloves will protect your hands from the cold air and prevent moisture loss. You can also wear gloves when doing household chores to avoid contact with harsh chemicals and detergents.

Avoid harsh soaps:

Some soaps can be harsh on your skin and cause dryness and irritation. Look for soaps that are gentle and moisturizing. Avoid using antibacterial soaps unless necessary, as they can be harsh on your skin.

Humidify your home:

Indoor heating can reduce the moisture in the air, leading to dry skin. Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air and prevent dryness. Aim for a humidity level between 30 and 50 percent.

Exfoliate your hands:

Exfoliating your hands can help to remove dead skin cells and improve the absorption of moisturizers. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub once or twice a week to keep your hands soft and smooth.

Dry hands during winter can be a nuisance, but they are preventable. By following the tips mentioned above, you can keep your hands soft, smooth, and healthy throughout the winter season. Remember to moisturize your hands regularly, use lukewarm water, wear gloves, avoid harsh soaps, humidify your home, and exfoliate your hands. With these simple steps, you can say goodbye to dry hands and enjoy the winter season to the fullest.
