Best Bedroom Plants for At-Home Zen and Fresher Air

Little to no experience required for some of these hardy plant buddies!

With keeping house plants as a new form of self care, it’s not surprising we’re all trying to flex our green thumbs a bit more. House plants not only help uplift your mind and bring more positive greenery to your room. Some of them can help purify the air too. NASA conducted a study investigating the extent to which certain plants remove toxins such as formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and benzene from the air. Whether you’re looking for a new plant buddy to enhance your at-home zen or reap its air-purifying benefits, there are many to choose from that are easy to maintain. Here are some easy-growing air purifying plants that were included in the NASA study.

Best bedroom plants for better sleep

  1. Variegated snake plant (Also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Laurentii’)

There’s a reason why the snake plant is one of the most popular house plants. It’s an evergreen perennial, meaning it’ll live for more than two years and retains its green leaves all year long. It does well in cool climates and low light conditions, and only needs to be watered once every few months. In other words, it’s the perfect plant to add some color to a dreary winter season.

  1. Green spider plant (Chlorophytum elatum)

Here’s another perennial plant that’s easy to grow at home. It has long thin leaves that are usually variegated with green or white. They may product tiny white flowers in the summer, and do best in indirect light, so don’t place it too close to your window! This plant requires a bit more upkeep as it does best in even moisture.

  1. Golden pothos (Also called devil’s ivy, Epipremnum aureum)

This evergreen plant’s nickname comes from the fact that it’s almost impossible to kill, and stays green even in the dark. If you’re an absolute beginner, golden pothos can be an excellent option to get you warmed up to plant care. Water it whenever the soil feels try to touch. It’s a popular plant used in aquariums—it absorbs nitrates from the aquarium to grow. Do note that this plant is toxic to both cats and dogs!

  1. Aloe vera

This cool-looking succulent has beneficial effects for skin, and is also a successful growing indoor plant. Just take care not to touch its spines! It requires bright, sunny growing conditions and need to be well drained, so take care not to overwater it! Remember that it’s a plant that’s acclimated to drought conditions. They’re especially hardy in the wintertime.

  1. English ivy (Hedera helix)

Here’s another evergreen perennial that’s sure to brighten your room all year long. They do best in partial to full shade, as well as moist soil, so don’t forget to water it while you’re out on vacation! Be sure to keep these trailing plants far away from children, dogs, and cats as they’re toxic. We recommend arranging them up in hanging baskets for an impressive display.

  1. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum ‘Mauna Loa’)

It’s possible to achieve a flowering plant indoors! Peace lilies require dappled sunlight and consistent moisture. With these healthy conditions, your peace lily may produce white flowers in the summer, and continue to bloom for the rest of the year. Remember that they are tropical plants, so keep them far from cold windows, but make sure they  still get enough light in the mornings.

  1. Chinese evergreen

This evergreen perennial thrives in consistently warm conditions, making it an ideal houseplant for indoor ambient temperatures. Protect it well from the chill though! Chinese evergreen perform best with a moderate amount of water, and can die from overwatering. Pink Chinese evergreen have been growing in popularity, if you like an extra pop of color for your living space!

  1. Bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii)

Bamboo palm plants can grow to be taller than an adult, so they make an impressive option for any indoor living space. Think placing them by a window as an additional privacy hedge! Do note that they should not be subject to direct sunlight for long periods of time. Just partial sun and occasional watering will do to help this perky-looking plant thrive.

Most of these plants maintain a lively vibrant appearance all year round. Just be sure to keep an eye on your indoor living conditions to ensure a constant temperature for the less hardy plants. Overwatering can be just as detrimental as drying them out, and remember to ask someone to watch over your plant buddy if you’re out on an extended vacation!
