Do You Know If Your Makeup Is Organic?

How To Know If Your Makeup Is Organic?

A new year often spurs personal resolutions regarding diet and lifestyle. In light of 2020, many people are now focusing on making more health-conscious decisions about the food they eat as well as the products they use every day.

If you’ve already started changing your dietary habits for the better, why not extend some of those same choices to other aspects of your daily routine – like choosing healthier makeup options?

We get it–you’re doubtful about whether organic makeup products can actually work well. After all, the “clean” beauty movement is still fairly new. Additionally, early clean or “green” beauty brands didn’t live up to discriminating standards set by makeup artists (like our founders).

Poor quality raw materials were used in those first products–chemically adulterated and containing shady ingredients that were included for marketing purposes instead of actual product performance.

Consumers are increasingly educating themselves on the safety of ingredients, and this has led to higher standards for the products they purchase. This demand for better-quality products has fueled the green beauty movement, which is having a positive impact on everyone who uses beauty products.

Understanding The Clean Beauty Movement Terms

To comprehend the clean beauty movement, you need to know the key phrases. Marketing companies often use unregulated terms (“clean” and “green”) to persuade people into buying their products, however, these interchangeable words don’t actually mean the same thing.

If you’re ever confused by beauty standards or terminology, 100% PURE is here to help. We’ve been in the industry for over 10 years and know all about organic makeup products.

Organic

A lot of us only decide to eat organic foods because we want to avoid consuming meals with harmful pesticides, doubtful fertilizers, and growth hormones. The same applies to the growable ingredients in our makeup–we want peace of mind knowing they were grown without dangerous chemicals.

Even though no makeup can be entirely organic due to containing minerals and pigments that can’t be cultivated, as long as a specific percentage of its ingredients are organically farmed, the product is allowed to don the label.

The organic label is jointly regulated by the USDA and FDA which work together to ensure product safety and accurate labeling.

Though USDA can’t certify makeup products as organic, the National Organic Program (NOP) still categorizes them as such.

What does this mean for your favorite eye shadows? A majority of the ingredients used in these products come from organic sources. If your shadow contains enough organic ingredients, it can be labeled as an organic product.

The organic ingredients in our products are the foundation of the clean beauty movement. By responsibly and safely growing these ingredients, we can create products that help your skin, not harm it. But remember, organic ingredients are only the first step.

Natural

The term “natural” is not regulated by any government organization, meaning that companies can put labels on anything-even if it contains a lot of artificial and processed ingredients.

Even though the word ‘natural’ usually connotes healthy and organic, many companies use it as a marketing tool to make people believe that their product is more beneficial for them than others. However, in reality, there might not be much difference.

By the time a natural ingredient is put through all the processes to make it “pure”, it has lost any skin benefits it once had. All that is left is an inferior product compared to synthetic ingredients.

To ascertain if the natural ingredients in your products are as unrefined as possible, get familiar with the company. For example, 100% PURE employs a variety of raw, vegan-friendly food items that are virtually untouched when used in our products.

Cruelty-Free

The term “cruelty-free” refers to items that have not harmed animals during any part of their creation, testing, manufacture, and/or distribution.

Many products that are advertised as “cruelty-free” are not, in fact, cruelty-free. Companies will often hire a third party to test their products before they sell them, and that third party may use animals for testing purposes.

Even though the company didn’t technically do the animal testing themselves, they’re still able to put “we do not test on animals” on their product packaging because of this loophole.

The Leaping Bunny program ensures that all products regulated by them are cruelty-free, meaning no animals were harmed during the creation of the product. So, if you’re ever questioning whether a product is safe for animal use, simply check for the Leaping Bunny seal.

Clean

Even though “clean” is the term that started it all, this word can be used to sell products that are far from clean. Normally, a product advertised as “clean” will be free of known toxins and instead contain ingredients that come from natural sources wherever possible.

Unlike other companies, we at 100% PURE refuse to label ourselves as simply a clean beauty company. We are the cleanest beauty and skincare product line available on the market, which is evident in our choice of ingredients and how they work with our products.

Eco-Friendly

Items that are eco-friendly won’t damage nature. The term “eco-friendly” encompasses the way a product is made, what ingredient goes into it, it’s packaging, and how to get rid of any leftover product.

Many companies that sell “cleaner” or “greener” cosmetics often follow environmental regulations more strictly.

Sustainable

A sustainable product is one that uses ingredients that are responsibly sourced and replenished. This type of product employs local workers when available and generally requires less land space than products with unsustainable ingredients. Sustainability means using ingredients that are better for the planet because they are recurring, not dwindling.

Vegan

Vegan products do not contain any animal parts or byproducts. To be certified as vegan, a product cannot contain anything that originally came from an animal.

Just because a product is vegan does not necessarily mean that it has not been tested on animals; be sure to check the package labeling.

Plant-Based

The majority of a plant-based product’s ingredients have come from plants. This includes oils, extracts, seed extracts, and oils in makeup. It’s important to note that just as natural ingredients can be highly processed and no longer resemble the original ingredient, the same is true for plant-based ingredients.

How Can You Know If Your Makeup Is Organic?

You can check if your makeup is organic by looking at the label on the back of the box. If any of the ingredients are organic, they will be listed there. You can also find out more information about a brand’s products and ingredients by visiting its website.

100% PURE is open about our ingredients because we believe that being transparent builds trust with our customers. If a brand isn’t transparent about what they’re selling, it raises red flags.

Importance Of Organic Ingredients

Many people don’t think that the organic sourcing of ingredients is important in makeup. You may have some concerns about switching from your favorite non-organic brand to an organic one. However, it’s essential to remember that organic products perform just as well as their traditional counterparts, if not better.

Our founders and a makeup artist with decades of experience have seen the negative consequences of using products laden with dubious ingredients and toxins. Not only does this damage your skin, but it also provides no beauty benefits.

Organic and raw ingredients that are food-grade have the ability to work together with your skin to deliver the best results for your skin’s health. 100% PURE believes makeup should never damage your skin.

What Ingredients To Look After In Makeup?

In terms of makeup ingredients, less is more. Fewer ingredients, less processing, less heat, fewer chemicals.

Our founders established 100% PURE to enable access to healthy beauty, but for them, sourcing organic and natural ingredients were not enough. That’s why 100% PURE has a living ingredient standard–which differentiates us from other “clean” beauty brands.

Not only are our ingredients organic, sustainably sourced, and minimally processed – many of them are in their raw state when they become part of our formulations. This means that the vital nutrients, oils, and plant derivatives are available for your skin to use when you apply our product.

In the beauty industry, it is easy to get caught up in marketing strategies instead of product quality and performance. However, organic ingredients are important and should not be ignored.

100% PURE’s products are unrivaled in both quality and performance. Most color cosmetics contain harsh, artificial ingredients that do nothing but sit on your skin and possibly clog your pores.

Our living ingredient-based products not only provide amazing color and style, but they also help balance your skin’s homeostasis and keep your skin healthy.

When you’re makeup shopping, go for products with these types of ingredients:

  • Certified organic
  • Raw
  • Unprocessed/unrefined
  • Sustainable
  • Naturally-derived
  • Living
  • Cruelty-free
  • Non-toxic

We only want the best for our readers, and that includes clean makeup products. To make your life easier, we recommend buying from a trusted source like 100% PURE.
