Learn to Control Your Oily Skin

5 Essential Tips To Have Control Over Your Oily Skin

For those with oily skin, it’s simple to give in to the temptation of momentary satisfaction. Washing and exfoliating your face until you feel squeaky clean while using astringents aggressively may provide immediate shine control, but will ultimately lead to even more issues down the line. Therefore, here are five tips that can help tackle not just symptoms but also underlying causes for long-term solutions:

1. Proper Hydration and Moisturizers

Sebum is an essential part of our skin’s natural protective barrier. Our bodies produce it to keep us moisturized, so if we actively try to dry out the shine or excess oil on our faces, our skin will overproduce sebum in an effort to restore balance and safeguard its integrity. The Tea Tree Balancing Moisturizer from 100% PURE is our favorite because it’s a moisturizer that is a lightweight and quick-absorbing moisturizer concentrated with acne-fighting herbs to refresh, soothe, and balance oily or acnegenic skin.

2. Gentle Cleanser

The cleansers we use include surfactants, which are detergents that attach to the oil on our skin and eliminate it when we wash our face. This allows us to stay clean. But over-cleansing can damage our natural lipid barrier because of these same surfactants. To stave off dry skin, switch out your foaming cleanser for a gentle gel formula that is free of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and has a low pH between 4.5-6. Additionally, do not forget to rinse any cleansing water off your face, as surfactants in the product can strip away helpful lipids if left on too long! Washing more often than needed will only further dry out your complexion by triggering an overproduction of sebum. The Lavender Oat Milk Soothing Cleanser is a deep cleanser that will also soothe your skin and is a great option for you to try.

3. Not All Oils Are Bad!

Contrary to popular belief, not all oils are bad for your skin. For those with oily or combination type of skin, an essential fatty acid known as linoleic acid is typically lacking in their sebum–which can lead to clogged pores and sticky residue on the surface of your face. However, if you select the right oil that contains a high amount of linoleic acid, it will help restore balance back to the complexion while simultaneously providing hydration, like the Lavender Tonique from 100% PURE!

4. Sebum-Regulating Ingredients

Niacinamide is an efficacious ingredient that works to regulate sebum production without blocking your body’s natural oils. It enhances ceramide production, enabling skin cells to remain naturally hydrated and moisturized, so sebum does not need to overcompensate for dryness. 100% PURE has an awarded product called Niacinamide Boost, which is just perfect and will minimize the appearance of large pores, reduce oil production, and restore sun-damaged skin for a rejuvenated glow.

What makes zinc truly unique is its ability to inhibit sebum production. This remarkable mineral can be found in several forms, such as zinc PCA, sulfate, and oxide varieties.

5. Watch Out With What You Eat!

Vitamins A and D have a major impact on the functioning of our sebaceous glands. Vitamin A is essential for optimal skin health, while vitamin D works to reduce oil production.

As we discussed, zinc is an important ingredient to include in skincare, yet it can also be consumed, which will decrease the amount of sebum on your skin surface!

To reduce acne, it is best to abstain from foods that can rev up your sebaceous glands by producing more oil. Examples include sugar, high-glycemic items, and dairy products which have the capability of triggering inflammation in the body. We suggest avoiding this altogether, or at least limiting their intake as much as possible!
