Makeup That Lasts All Day: Tips and Tricks

Mastering Long-Lasting Makeup

We’ve all had that moment; we look in the mirror after completing our makeup only to see it slowly slide down our face several hours later.

Not only is this frustrating, but often there isn’t time for touch-ups throughout the day. But don’t worry, we spoke with some experts and they gave us the inside scoop on how to keep your makeup from moving.

We’ll provide you with tips and tricks to make sure your primer does its job so you can focus on yours.

Understanding What Happens With Your Makeup

You applied the long-lasting foundation you bought at the drugstore, but by midmorning, your makeup had already disappeared. Why? There are a few reasons why your makeup might not be lasting as long as you want it to.

You’re Very Touchy

One telltale sign that you’ve been touching your face throughout the day is if you have blemishes in a particular area, although another clue is if your makeup has rubbed off.

You’re Late

We’ve all experienced those mornings where we overslept and had to speed through our skincare routine to make up for the time lost.

However, if you’re rushing your skincare steps, your skin won’t be able to properly absorb all of the product, which then sets a base for makeup products that won’t go on smoothly.

Humidity

Harsher weather conditions can do a number on your makeup since it isn’t made to withstand those elements. If you step outside and it’s raining, humid, or even windy, chances are your makeup won’t stay put like you want it to.

Also, when the temperature rises and causes you to perspire, this can directly turn your liquid-based makeup into a runny mess, clinging to any area of exposed skin.

Too Much Balm

Long-wearing lip color can be daunting because it usually isn’t comfortable or hydrating. Apply it over a coat of lip balm, which creates a waxy barrier that feels good but doesn’t help the lipstick adhere.

Exfoliate More

Your skin is constantly renewing itself. In fact, new skin cells are made every 28–30 days. As the new cells are produced, the old ones are pushed to the surface, where they should be sloughed off naturally.

However, if you don’t exfoliate properly, that layer of dead cells can build up on your skin.

If you don’t remove dead skin cells before applying your makeup, the makeup will attach to the skin cells and flake away when those cells die, leaving behind awkward patches of color.

Too Much Oil

If your skin is producing an excess of sebum, it can be difficult for your makeup to maintain staying power.

Oily skin does have its perks—you always get to enjoy a healthy-looking, dewy finish. But if you want to make your makeup last longer, you’re going to need some products and techniques to blot away the oil.

So are you ready for your makeup grip to get stronger? Try out these tips below to help boost your product’s longevity!

7 Tips for a Long-Lasting Makeup

Even the best waterproof mascara can let you down and leave your face streaked with makeup. If this has happened to you, don’t worry! Here are seven tips to help prevent it from happening again.

1. Primer

By filling in fine lines, smoothing over pores, and sealing in moisture, primers create an ideal canvas for your makeup. By adding a primer to your daily routine, you can help keep foundation from drying out your skin or interacting with excess oil.

Not only will this type of primer give your makeup staying power, but it is also formulated with moisture to help skin feel hydrated for hours.

In addition, it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while keeping your makeup in place.

Make sure your moisturizer is dry before using a primer, and wait for the primer to be completely dry as well. Only then should you apply foundation.

2. Set Your Makeup With Powder

Setting powders aim to give your skin a smooth, matte finish that lasts all day. They work by absorbing excess oil and reflecting light away from any blemishes or imperfections.

Setting powders are suitable for all skin types, unlike setting sprays, which tend to work best on dryer skin.

  • If you’re looking for a new powder to add to your makeup routine, give this translucent one a try. It can help complete your look while adding radiance to your skin without any weight or residue.

Applying a thick layer of setting powder to your liquid foundation and concealer and then dusting off the excess is commonly referred to as “baking.”

However, this technique rarely results in prolonging the wear of your makeup. More often than not, it leads to a cake-like finish that can settle into fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Create Layers

Not only does an excess of makeup cause it to slide off your skin, but it can also crease.

To avoid this problem, some brands have created buildable formulas that allow you to safely add extra layers on top of existing ones.

Without these products, adding too many layers will create a thick and cakey layer of makeup that is prone to sliding right off your skin.

4. Moisturize Your Skin

Your makeup will last longer if your skin is properly hydrated. A harsh cleanser will cause you to produce too much oil or have excessively dry skin.

If you’re looking for a raw, vegan, and cruelty-free option, our coconut cream is perfect. Extracted without heat or chemical solvents, all of the nourishing ingredients in its natural state are retained.

Coconut oil is great for any skin type but can be especially helpful to moisturize blemish-prone skin. For serious hydration, use raw coconut cream to cleanse your face as well as add moisture.

5. Remove Oil

Blotting papers enable you to eliminate extra oil without caking on more makeup. If you don’t want to use blotting papers, a tissue will do the job just fine.

If your skin feels oily throughout the day, gently place a blotting paper on your face to remove the oil and keep your makeup from running.

6. Buy Products That Will Last

Long-lasting makeup may help you preserve your look for longer periods of time, but it often contains harsh chemicals that can damage your skin.

Choose cosmetic brands that make smudge-proof products and never use unsafe ingredients that would harm your body in any way.

For example, many eye makeup products contain dimethicone, a polymer that creates a waterproof barrier on lashes. However, this chemical is very drying to natural lashes and can make them more brittle and prone to breaking.

Instead, go for eyeshadow, eyeliner, eyeshadow primers, and mascara that use long-lasting ingredients. For example, use a volumizing mascara with a formula that contains a mix of plant-based ingredients to help your mascara last up to 12 hours without flaking or smudging.

7. Tips to Apply Your Makeup Like a Pro

There are definitely right and wrong ways to apply beauty products if you want them to actually stay put.

Using the wrong tools or applying them in the incorrect order can make a big difference in how long they last. If you’re looking for some tips from people who know what they’re doing, read on!

  • Apply setting powder to your skin with a puff instead of a brush for the best results. Pushing the powder into your skin will set your makeup and prevent you from having to wipe or brush it away later.
  • Instead of oil-free products, choose those with natural oils. Oil-free skincare is often drying and can irritate your skin, especially if you have oily skin to begin with (which could be caused by dehydration).
  • If you’re using a liquid foundation, apply it slowly and evenly. Let the foundation dry before moving on to concealer, highlighter, bronzer, blush, or any other face makeup; otherwise, you might smudge the foundation.
  • Keep your touch-ups light. If you need midday makeup adjustments, use blotting paper or tissue instead of a heavy, tinted face powder. And if you want to add color to your lips, go for a lip liner touch up rather than more lipstick. This will help keep your lip color in place without any extra heaviness.

If you want your makeup to last all day, try these simple application hacks! This way, you can spend more time outside and less time worrying about reapplying your makeup.
