What is Combination Skin?

Having combination skin can be stressful, but fear not we are here to help.

It can be irritating to have skin that doesn’t appear to follow the rules, especially if you believe you are following your dermatologist’s advice to maintain healthy skin. Even if you’re using the proper products, you can still have dry, flaky skin in some regions and oily, blemish-prone areas in others.

If this speaks to you, you most likely have combination skin.

Don’t worry, our team is happy to help you. We’ll discuss the factors that make combination skin so complicated, as well as how utilizing the purest, most eco-friendly products possible can help you achieve balance and promote good skin health. Let’s start by discussing how the skin functions.

The Skin

Understanding how your skin functions is important to learning how to properly take care of your largest organ. That entails comprehending sebum’s functioning and the significance of sebum to healthy skin. Additionally, we’ll discuss how skin cell turnover helps to maintain the balance of your skin.

Sebum & the Sebaceous Glands

Sebum, a type of natural oil produced by your skin, helps to preserve and moisturize. Similar to how little sebum can cause dry skin, excessive sebum production can result in oily skin. Combination skin can have both oily and dry patches because there may be too much sebum in certain areas and not enough in others.

Fatty acids, waxes, carbohydrates, and even cholesterol are all present in sebum. The sebaceous glands (the glands responsible for oil production) of normal skin types create the ideal amount of sebum.

Surprisingly, the majority of us have reasonably normal skin, but the items we use can dehydrate our skin, which could result in an excessive sebum production.

Cellular Turnover Rate

Another detail of pores and skin fitness is cell turnover. Your pores and skin cells are continuously renewing, and the newer your pores and skin cells are, the healthier your skin is. As children, our pores and skin cells flip over rapidly. But, as we get older, the procedure slows down and takes 28-30 days in adults

When pores and skin cells don’t flip over as quickly, a buildup of lifeless pores and skin cells can accumulate. This can end up specifically traumatic for those with sensitive skin, acne-inclined or oily skin.

Dead pores and skin cells can blend with the sebum in your skin, clogging pores, developing zits, and blemishes. Sadly, many acne treatments like those that exfoliate with BHA or AHA, can make your pores and skin dry.

For those who have combination skin, adding too many exfoliants on the face can worsen the problem, and create enormously dry, flaky patches, or even oilier skin.

The Skin’s Microbiome

The microbiome of organisms in your pores are crucial to having balanced skin. When the organisms residing in the pores and skin are unbalanced, it results in problems such as breakouts, dry patches, irritation, redness, and oiliness. The skin microbiome is likewise important in preserving and protecting your skin barrier.

Since the fitness of the skin’s microflora is personally associated with the fitness of your gut, maintaining healthy habits is important to having radiant pores and skin.

Not positive if your pores and skin are balanced? Let’s chat about what it means to have combination skin.

Define Combination Skin

Combination pores and skin is neither fully dry nor fully oily. People with this skin type commonly have dry regions and regions where they have extra oil or even breakouts.

People who have combination pores and skin may also have an oily T-section, blackheads at the nostril and chin, or blemishes and oily regions at the forehead. Most of the time, the T-section is the usual location for clogged pores and extra oil when you have combination skin.

While you can have oil in those regions, different areas of your face may also appear notably dry or rashy. These regions, commonly the cheeks and eyes, may also look like they absorb moisturizer and are still tight.

Do You Have Combination Skin?

If you believe you have combination skin, you can always do a quick check to find out. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Don’t add any more products on your skin and after an hour, look for signs of dryness or oiliness.

Combination skin will commonly have advanced oily regions within the T-zone and dry patches at the cheeks.

What Causes this Skin Type?

There are several causes as to why you may have combination skin:

  • Genes. Your genes decide lots of elements for your skin, just like the size of pores and the amount of sebum you produce. If your mother and/or father has combination skin, you’ll be much more likely to have it too.
  • Environment. Where you live and the season, is a key factor as to what the condition of your pores and skin is. In the winter, it’s ordinary for pores and skin to experience a drier appearance. During summer time, humidity and warmth can make pores and skin moist, which might also interrupt sebum production and make the skin oilier.
  • Skincare Products. Sometimes the skincare products we use to assist with combination skin can cause extra damage than good. If you always use harsh, drying ingredients for your T-zone, it may cause the sebaceous glands to provide extra oil to make amends for the absence of moisture. Many times, oily pores and skin are overproducing oil due to the fact that they are too dry.

Whatever is triggering your skin to be oily and dry, you just need to get it balanced. Thankfully, your skin can be “normal” skin just by using the correct ingredients.

The Skincare Routine You Need

It’s already difficult to decide which products will be the perfect match for your skin, but combination skin may be specifically complex to manage. If you try a product that’s made for dry pores and skin, you can threaten clogging your pores. If you try a non-comedogenic product, you may turn out to be dehydrating your skin.

Thankfully, plant-based products are great for every skin type. They assist to synergistically stabilize pores and skin without harsh chemicals or poisonous substances.

Cleansing and Moisturizing

Before you put on your makeup, make sure your skin is primed for success and that it’s well cleansed and moisturized. If you have combination skin, you’ll want something that can adjust to the oil in the T-zone and still hydrate the rest of your skin.
