Why a Glass Spray Bottle Should Be in Your DIY Arsenal

Get a spritz of inspiration for your next DIY beauty project

There’s just something about a glass spray bottle that feels more worthy than its evil cousin: plastic. It has a certain je ne sais quoi, but it also has a more practical appeal.

For starters, it’s better for your health. As you know, better for you often coincides with better for the planet. In fact, you could reduce your carbon footprint while improving the look of your vanity just by going old school with a glass spray bottle today.

Furthermore, glass is refined, literally and figuratively. It’s sophisticated, natural, and discerning. Plastic, on the other hand, is cheap and disposable.

Shouldn’t the quality of your container match the DIY creation you worked hard to craft? We think so.

Why a Glass Spray Bottle?

Glass spray bottles benefit your health, the longevity of your DIY mixture, and the environment. A transparent container too often taken for granted, you’ll appreciate the look and feel of a glass spray bottle as soon as you hold it in your hands.

Use It For Your Safety

As a well-educated DIY cosmetician, you’re probably aware of the harm that plastic containing BPA can do to your body. If you don’t, let’s break it down (the way that plastic doesn’t).

BPA stands for Bisphenol-A. It’s a known endocrine disruptor, meaning it can mimic your body’s natural hormones. It can behave like estrogen and, in high doses, may lead to infertility and other health problems. There’s no way you’re keeping your thoughtfully formulated, organically-sourced mists and makeup in that kind of container!

Alternatively, glass doesn’t leak toxins, or anything at all, into your beauty product. In fact, it’s the best known substance for locking in and preserving perishables.

Keep It Out of Landfills

Did you know that glass is 100% recyclable? More than that, it’s easy to do. A glass bottle can go from the recycling bin to a store shelf in 30 days.

Unlike plastic, glass can be recycled innumerable times over. Whereas virgin glass requires around 1.2 kilograms of raw materials to be extracted from the earth, recycled glass can be reused endlessly.

Recycled glass requires far less energy than producing virgin glass during the manufacturing stage, too. Just 10% of recycled glass used in production results in roughly a 5% reduction in carbon emissions and 3% reduction in energy use.

Approximately 80% of recovered glass is recycled into “new” glass. Glass that’s contaminated can still be repurposed, too. It finds a new life in construction and sand-blasting.

Plastic, on the other hand, tends to end up contaminating our water supply, from rivers to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the ocean. If you can avoid plastic containers, you should.

So Fresh, So Clean

Glass has a certain magic to it. Yes, it’s easy to clean and keeps your beauty product fresh. And from an aesthetic perspective, it delivers that same energy.

Shiny, sparkling glass feels great in your hands. The way it refracts light is as pure as water or diamonds. This effect transfers to your handcrafted DIY toner or other wellness potion. In other words, the mist, oil, or lotion you spent hours of research and planning perfecting will look its best in a glass spray bottle.

Whether you want to feel luxurious as you apply your concoction to your skin, or you’re giving a sample to a friend as a gift, you (and your product) deserve the look and feel of glass.

Choosing a Glass Spray Bottle & Nozzle

It’s time to get inspired. Just browsing elegant glass containers motivates us to craft new beauty formulas to encapsulate. With so many options, your mind will go into maker mode as you consider what to DIY next.

Let’s start by checking out the types of nozzles you might choose!

Types of Nozzles

Every DIY concoction needs the right application method.

If you’re crafting a water-based face or body mist, then you need – you guessed it – a mister. Have you added some heavy duty essential oils, like tea tree oil? You might want to go for a spritzer (the nozzle, not the nightcap) to handle the extra weight. And if you’re mixing up your own proprietary cleaning products, you’ll need a spray nozzle.

There are options for denser products, too. For example, consider investing in a few flip caps for DIY lotions, shampoos, and sugar scrubs. You can even impress your friends by covertly leaving your handcrafted soap or moisturizer on the bathroom sink with a convenient pump cap, just like the professionals use (but classier).

Types of Glass Containers

First, let’s start with color. If you’ve made a brightly colored product, you may be tempted to show it off in a clear glass spray bottle. However, depending on the ingredients you’ve used, you might be better off with a green, blue, or amber glass.

Some ingredients, such as most essential oils, will degrade in sunlight. Colored containers protect the integrity of your mixture by preventing sunlight from getting in.

Don’t be discouraged, though. You can still show off by using a fancy glass spray bottle. For example, the simple elegance of a Boston round will make your body spray stand out on your own shelf.

Or, skip the nozzle all together and opt for a rather adorable cream jar. Cream jars come in all sizes, and you might even find them in fun shapes like hexagons and octagons. They’re perfect for a lip gloss, DIY face scrub, foundation, or a tub of body butter.

Go Glass

No matter what you choose, get a glass spray bottle. Nothing feels better than knowing you’re doing the environment a service. Not only are you making a statement about your views on plastic, you’ll enjoy the powerful look of your homemade beauty product in the container it deserves.
