The Importance of SPF

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Sun Protection

It’s no secret that up to 90% of your skin’s premature aging is due to sun exposure, otherwise known as photoaging. To equip yourself with the right tools and knowledge in order to prevent these pesky signs of aging, we’ve put together this helpful Q&A so you can make educated decisions pertaining to your skincare routine.

UVA and UVB rays, what’s the difference?

It’s possible that you are familiar with UV rays, and their potentially damaging effects on your skin. Therefore it is essential to be informed about the various types of these rays when selecting a sunscreen that is appropriate for you.

UVA

Longwave rays that seep deep into the skin, leading to wrinkles and premature aging as well as posing a risk for DNA damage and skin cancer. These menacing rays should not be taken lightly since they are hazardous for health and beauty alike.

UVB

These penetrating shortwave rays contain slightly more energy and can cause direct damage to DNA, resulting in sunburns, skin cancer and other damaging effects.

It’s essential to find a formula that provides wide-ranging UVA and UVB protection. A proven ingredient for this is Zinc Oxide, which can be found in many skincare products and helps protect from both types of rays.

How can unprotected sun exposure negatively affect my skin?

Direct and untargeted sun rays can cause our skin to go through numerous chemical changes, such as DNA damage, the formation of free radicals which are responsible for cell destruction and the stimulation of enzymes like Collagenase. This enzyme breaks down collagen fibers in addition to blocking new ones from being formed; both processes resulting in wrinkles & decreased elasticity across our bodies.

What negative visual effects will the sun have on my skin if it is left unprotected?

Sun damage can result in a number of negative consequences, such as:

  • Dull, dehydrated and damaged skin;
  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone;
  • Wrinkles and Fine lines;
  • Reduced elasticity leading to sagging;
  • Actinic Keratosis – precancerous, red patches of skin

This list demonstrates the aesthetic effects of photoaging, so it is important to remember that sun exposure without protection can have detrimental impacts – including skin cancer. Make sure you visit your dermatologist regularly and examine any dubious moles or discoloration instantly.

Chemical and mineral sunscreen, what makes them different?

The FDA only permits 17 substances to be utilized in sunscreens, and both mineral-based and chemical products offer wide-ranging protection from UVA and UVB rays. Depending on your product of choice, it may shield you against either one or the other – so make sure to always double check.

Chemical Sunscreen

These sunscreens form a shield of protection on top of the skin, providing effective defense from UV radiation by absorbing it before allowing it to penetrate.

Mineral Sunscreen

These sunscreens, or “physical” sunscreens, are specially formulated to form a thin barrier on top of the skin that has reflective properties similar to mirror – reflecting UV rays away from your body.

Finding the ideal sunscreen for you is a personalized process, dependent on both your complexion and preference. Luckily, there are several formulas outfitted with active ingredients to guard against broad spectrum rays while caring for your face.
