We're giving a little more life to this natural winemaking byproduct!
Whether you’re new to the natural skin care sphere or are a seasoned veteran, you may have noticed a common trend with the ingredients you see. For example, there’s coconut oil, avocado oil, olive oil…yup, many of the ingredients you see are actually edible and often found in our own kitchen! Today we’re serving you yet another food-related beauty gem that’s a common ingredient in clean beauty skin care products. We’re talking about grapeseed oil. We’re loving this plant oil for its potent nutrients, as well as its compatibility with many skin types.
What’s grapeseed oil?
Sure, grapeseed oil sounds great and all, but how is it actually produced? Is someone squeezing oil out from grape seeds? It turns out grapeseed oil is a natural byproduct from winemaking, so we’re not wasting the whole fruit just to get to the oil! Wines are usually made from the fruit part. But grape seeds actually have plenty of juicy nutrients in them as well, and we’ve learned to adopted them into cosmetics as well.
What are grapeseed oil benefits for skin?
While there aren’t any studies that directly cite the benefits of grapeseed oil on skin, it contains high levels of nutrients that are indeed essential for skin health. Here are some of the ways that it may benefit your skin.
Fight acne
Bacterial infection and oily skin aren’t the whole story in regards to acne causes. Studies have found that acne-prone skin is often deficient in an important essential fatty acid that the body can’t create on its own: linoleic acid. A whopping 66-75.3% of grape seed oil is made up of linoleic acid.
Anti-inflammatory
Grape seed oil is rich in vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that helps reduce inflammation in skin which might lead to a range of irritating skin conditions.
Anti-aging
Many of the antioxidants found in grape skin that end up in your wine are found in grape seeds too! That’s including resveratrol, which may help prevent UV damage to skin that can cause free radical formation and fine lines.
Doesn’t clog pores
There are so many plant oils out there packed with the best nutrients for your skin, but you can’t exactly use all of them! That’s because some of them are too heavy and greasy for your skin, and could cause breakouts. Luckily grapeseed oil’s high composition in the beneficial omega-6 fatty acid—linoleic acid—makes it lightweight and skin friendly for even acne-prone and oily skin.
Lightweight and fast-absorbing
Grapeseed oil’s lightweight fatty acid composition also makes it fast-absorbing, making it the perfect ingredient to use around the whole body.
