How to Find Your Concealer Shade

Concealer Pro Tips

If you’re still using the same concealer from 2012, it’s time for an update. Just like our skin tone changes as we age, so does the type of concealer we need to use. In just the last decade, there have been some serious advancements in makeup technology.

When applied correctly, concealers can be your best friend. But if you choose the wrong shade or don’t apply it properly, you could end up looking washed out, sickly, or even like a clown.

Picking the right concealer and knowing how to apply it are essential for any makeup routine. Our experts will show you how to find the perfect shade and use your concealer wand like a pro, so you can achieve flawless skin that looks natural and real.

Does Everyone Need a Concealer?

Concealer can go a long way in brightening your complexion and evening out your skin tone. You can use it on its own, or in combination with foundation and/or powder, to target areas of redness, cover blemishes, or brighten dark areas under your eyes.

Concealer can be your best friend when it comes to needing less foundation and achieving a more natural-looking glow.

Simply apply concealer under your eyes, on the chin, and around the nose to level out skin tone without having to rely heavily on foundation.

Should I Use Foundation Or Concealer?

It’s possible to use concealer in place of foundation, and vice versa, but it’s ultimately best to let each product stick to its core purpose. Here’s a breakdown of why that is.

Think of concealer as foundation’s big sister. Just like older siblings are usually tougher and stronger, so is concealer in the makeup world.

Because it can pack more of a pigment punch, you want to use it sparingly, only targeting small areas instead of using it all over your face like foundation.

Foundation is more spreadable than concealer, which usually sets quicker. The foundation also allows for slightly more blending, making it ideal for larger areas of coverage.

This 100% Pure foundation not only provides your skin with a powerful mix of essential nutrients, but it also contains acai. Acai heals and protects by using antioxidants, which make it easier for your skin to absorb and stay balanced.

If you find yourself without concealer, don’t worry! As an alternative, you can use foundation. It’s a little trickier to apply, but worth it in a pinch.

To get the perfect consistency, add a few drops of beauty oil or raw coconut oil before application.

Guide To Find Your Concealer Shade

There are a lot of shades of concealer out there, and it can be tough to find the right one. But don’t worry, we’re here to help.

1. What is Your Skin Tone?

The shade of your skin is what you see when you look at your skin in its entirety. To put it simply, it’s the combination of your skin’s natural pigment plus your undertone (which we will discuss shortly).

Your skin tone can differ based on the time of year and even as you age. Skin tone is determined by how much melanin is in your epidermis, but undertones also play a role.

2. What About Your Undertone?

Your undertone is the hue that lies just below the surface of your skin. If you take a look at thinner areas on your body (like under your eyes or inside your wrist), you’ll see different colors in your skin’s complexion.

There are three main types of skin undertones: cool, neutral, and warm. To figure out your undertone, take a look at the veins on the underside of your wrist.

The color of your veins can help you determine which undertone category you fall into.

  • If you have cool undertones, blue or purple colors will show on the underside of your wrists.
  • People with warm undertones will see golden or peachy colors on their wrists.
  • If your veins are difficult to see or if their color is close to your skin’s natural hue, you have a neutral undertone.

Once you understand your skin tone and undertone, shade selection becomes a breeze—pick whatever best suits your needs!

3. What Your Concealer Should Do

A concealer can be used for a multitude of purposes, from hiding blemishes to evening out your skin tone. Depending on your needs, you might need more than one shade of concealer.

We all get them eventually—those pesky dark circles that seem to worsen as we age. And for some of us, they can be hereditary too! But don’t despair, there are things you can do to help minimize the appearance of dark under-eye circles.

There are particular shades of concealer that are needed to correct dark circles that are bluish or purplish. 100% Pure products are made for color-correcting these types of imperfections.

For acne-prone skin. Acne is a common concern for people of all ages. Most acne bumps can be classified as either new blemishes (red and swollen) or old blemishes (healing, with possibly flaky skin).

There are a few things to consider when finding the right concealer shade for acne blemishes. Firstly, choose a shade that is approximately one-half lighter than your natural skin tone; if you go darker, then the blemish will appear dark itself.

However, don’t choose a shade too light, or else it won’t match your skin tone and will create an unappealing polka-dot effect. It’s also not uncommon to need different shades of concealer depending on the season.

For example, someone who is naturally fairer in winter will require a lighter concealer than what they would use in summertime.

Concealer Mistakes To Avoid

Even if you have your shade down pat, there are still other ways you can make a concealer blunder that will entirely ruin your look. Here are three common ones and how to prevent them.

Light-Colored

You know the look—the dark, sunken eyes that make you appear exhausted. Raccoon eyes occur when you use too much light-colored concealer under your eye area. To avoid this mistake, don’t swipe the concealer all the way underneath your eye.

Gently dab a concealer brush or your ring finger in the inside corner of your eye and blend it down the side of your nose. If you have any excess, apply the product to the outer corner of your eye. Then, blend both areas inward until satisfied.

Too Much At Once

Although concealer is fabulous, it’s important not to go overboard. Remember that it isn’t foundation, so using too much will leave you looking drained. Additionally, if you use too much under your eyes, it could seep into any lines and wrinkles, making them more visible.

This type of concealer is exactly what you need for a flawless finish. If you want more coverage, our easily-buildable concealer makes the job easy and helps prevent mistakes.

Concealing After Foundation

To have your makeup last all day, you should always start by applying concealer before foundation. However, only do so after moisturizing and using a primer on your skin.

This will help ensure that your skincare routine is locked in place and provides a smooth base for your foundation to grip onto.

Choose a Nourishing Concealer

Concealer is an important tool for creating a flawless look. It can cover blemishes, correct dark circles, and even out your skin tone. Choosing the right shade of concealer is essential for achieving a natural appearance.

This concealer is made with living ingredients that are nourishing for your skin, so you can get your skin looking its best.
