10 Myths About Skincare That You Might Not Know

With such a wide variety of skincare facts and fiction running rampant online, it can be difficult to tell what is true. With that in mind, we are here to help you identify any myths surrounding skincare so that you don’t fall for them! Keep reading for the actual truth behind some common misconceptions circulating on the internet – make sure these ideas never reach your skin!

1. “Your skin absorbs everything you apply topically.”

Embellished as the mission of many organic skincare companies, is this truly correct? Let’s delve into the details: your skin can be broken down into three layers. The outermost we see and call the epidermis. As you go deeper, there lies the dermis layer – producing collagen and hyaluronic acid – followed by subcutaneous tissue or hypodermis at its core.

It can be difficult for skincare products to even reach the epidermis layer since your skin barrier works painstakingly hard to maintain hydration, while at the same time shielding your skin from any penetrating external substances.

Contradicting the myth: Most skin care products battle to penetrate past the protective barrier of your skin – making it essential to consider both the delivery system and ingredients for effectiveness. Think about it as if you were attempting to shampoo with an advantageous dry shampoo underneath a shower cap – why would that be beneficial? The product needs access beyond the obstacle before its effects may take place.

2. “If it’s not ‘Non-Comedogenic, Hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested/recommended’ products, then it’s not good.”

To back up their claims, companies often bring together a sample group to actually use the product. Unfortunately, this is usually composed of ten people with perfectly normal skin – not really an accurate reflection of the wider population. Sure, it might be non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic for those particular individuals, but that doesn’t guarantee it will work for everyone else who could have many other potential skin issues or no allergies at all!

Don’t be fooled by false claims – dermatologists may not have even liked the products! Companies regularly state that their products were tested by dermatologists, but this does not mean they approved of them. To get an accurate assessment, it is best to test out a product on your own skin and examine every ingredient in its formulation, as opposed to merely focusing on one component.

3. “Occlusive products do not let your skin breath”

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Occlusives are nothing like plastic wrap, as they do not generate heat that would make you perspire if applied to your skin. Instead, occlusives assist in sealing moisture within the epidermis and impede water loss through evaporation. Wear a very rich moisturizer on your skin, like the ones from 100% PURE – it will feel perfectly comfortable!

Contrary to popular belief, silicones are not suffocating and do not clog pores! In fact, they are one of the most breathable occlusives that can be found on the market.

4. “As long the ingredients are the same, the price doesn’t matter.”

Just because an item has the same components doesn’t guarantee that it will have a similar quality. Consider chocolate chip cookies as an example, where two individuals use exactly the same ingredients but one bakes them perfectly while the other overcooks and burns them. Regardless of using analogous elements, one batch is likely to be more delicious than another. This coincides with skincare products; even if they share comparable ingredients, their usefulness might still differ greatly. 100% PURE has the commitment to producing the purest, healthiest products, and they educate people by having an ingredient glossary for you to have sure of what you’re applying to your skin.

Contradicting popular belief, it’s not only ingredients that make a product stand out, but also the advanced formulating technology used in its making!

5. “Use Apple Cider Vinegar as a toner for clearing up acne.“

Although Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has beneficial exfoliating and antibacterial properties that may help with acne, it is not recommended to use it daily. Too much of anything can be dangerous – the overuse of any antibacterial product can strip away good bacteria, which helps protect your skin’s natural balance.

Need to know: Applying ACV on your skin can be beneficial, but it must only be done once a week and always diluted with water to make the pH more pleasant for your dermis.

6. “You have to cleanse really, really well.”

Don’t fall prey to this falsehood! Following such advice can be detrimental to your skin. Of course, cleansers contain surfactants, which aid in removing makeup and dirt from your face when you wash it – but that doesn’t mean you should do so too frequently. Surfactants are unable to differentiate between natural moisture/oils and dirt; as a result, they will take away both if you cleanse excessively.

Individuals with impaired skin barriers often fall into the trap of over-cleansing, which can be detrimental to their health. Instead, try locating pH-balanced cleansers that won’t rob your skin of beneficial ingredients and will keep it at a gentle level. A mild yet effective approach is the key here!

Myth debunked: Over-cleansing twice a day isn’t necessary! Discover what’s best for your skin, but maybe skipping cleansing in the morning is all that it needs.

7. “You don’t need to apply sunscreen if you have a darker skin tone.”

Absolutely not! We cannot stress enough how important it is to wear sunscreen every day. Let us tell you why: UVB rays can burn and UVA rays will age your skin, both of which contribute to the development of skin cancer. It’s essential that you protect yourself from these rays even on cloudy days as they are still present in our atmosphere–UV protection should never be neglected regardless of the weather conditions. Keep in mind that preventing sun damage now is much better than dealing with its consequences later – “better safe than sorry” has never been more accurate when talking about SPF use!

Let’s put this myth to rest – no matter your skin tone, wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen daily is essential in order to safeguard yourself and your skin from UVA and UVB rays.

8. “Start using anti-aging skincare early is better.”

Although some may feel the urge to start using anti-aging products as soon as possible, it’s important to remember that preventative measures should always come first. This includes regularly moisturizing your skin and applying sunscreen every day, along with avoiding any excessive physical friction – so no more vigorously rubbing your skin dry; instead, gently patting it is a better option. Ultimately, when selecting skincare items, you don’t have to actively search for “anti-aging” options since they aren’t necessarily necessary at this point in time.

Typically, they come at an incredibly high price. If you’re in your teens or early twenties, it is likely that your skin cell turnover rate is running at an optimum level. However, once you reach your late twenties and beyond, adding actives like vitamin C to the equation can help maintain this healthy process – even transitioning on to using retinoids or retinol if required.

Dispel the myth: Give your skin some respect! It’s intelligent and knows how to take care of itself.

9. “There’s no difference between purging and breaking out.”

When you incorporate retinoids, retinol, vitamin C or AHA into your skincare regimen, your skin goes through a detoxification process known as purging. Through this regenerative period, these products accelerate the rejuvenation of new skin cells – in other words – it speeds up the arrival of a fresh and radiant-looking complexion!

If the products you’re using don’t have any active ingredients that encourage skin cellular regeneration, it’s likely your skin is simply breaking out rather than purging. Additionally, other factors like stress and hormonal changes may be at play here as well; not to mention that triple-scoop ice cream topped off with chocolate sauce! We hear ya – these things happen even to the most careful of us.

Dispel the misconception: Purifying can take place after incorporating certain elements into your regimen. Acne outbreaks are caused by strain, hormones, and dieting.

10. “You need to change products regularly because your skin gets used to them.”

Contrary to popular belief, your skin does not develop a resistance to products. You may think that this is happening if you use active ingredients like vitamin A, C, or AHA since they typically deliver dramatic results in a short time frame. But what’s actually occurring is that the major change already happened once you began using them. This can give off the perception of diminishing effects over time when really it’s just because there was an initial spike in activity once first used and then leveled off afterward.

Don’t be fooled: Just because products with these ingredients may not produce fast results doesn’t mean they aren’t still effective. In fact, the progress is often just as steady – it’s only that we’re used to instant gratification so much now that it can seem like nothing is happening! #PressReset and recognize the power of gradual gains.
